President Obama misspelled Franklin’s iconic song as he introduced the songstress at the White House celebration of women of soul Thursday night.
The President praised Franklin, who performed at his 2009 inauguration ceremony, for how her song became a rallying cry for the marginalized.
“When Aretha first told us what R-S-P-E-C-T meant to her, she had no idea it would become a rallying cry for African Americans and women and then anyone who felt marginalized,” Obama said in praise of the Queen of Soul.
Franklin was in the house for the East Room event, along with Patti LaBelle, Ariana Grande, Melissa Etheridge, Janelle Monae, Jill Scott and Tessanne Chin.
The President said March, which is Women’s History Month, was the perfect occasion to honor the trailblazers in music since he “shares this house with brilliant, creative, talented, somewhat stubborn women.”
